Belleville, TX – Armenian youth from across Texas came together for a weekend of adventure, camaraderie, and activism at the AYF Houston Campout, held from March 7-9, 2025. Hosted by AYF Houston, the annual event provided an exciting lineup of outdoor activities, including games, BBQ, music, and adventure, while also serving as a platform for meaningful discussions on Armenian advocacy and civic engagement.
With over 65 attendees, the campout buzzed in energy as participants engaged in different activities and discussions. The Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region (ANCA-WR) played a key role in enriching the camp experience with an educational session led by ANCA-WR Community Coordinator Garen Jinbachian and ANCA Government Affairs Director Tereza Yerimyan. Addressing the enthusiastic crowd of young Armenians, they delved into the importance of grassroots activism, the role of Armenian Americans in shaping U.S. policy, and ways to get involved in pro-Armenia advocacy efforts on local, state, and federal levels.
“The energy and commitment of the Armenian youth in Texas are truly inspiring,” said Garen Jinbachian. “Through the AYF Houston Campout, we are building a stronger and more stable future for Armenians all around the world. Especially to our brothers and sisters in Artsakh that need our helping hand – now more than ever.”
The weekend-long retreat, open to overnight participants aged 14 and up, fostered a deeper connection to Armenian heritage and culture, reinforcing the importance of collective action in addressing the challenges facing the Armenian Nation. With the backdrop of Texas’ scenic outdoors, attendees not only forged lasting friendships but also gained a renewed sense of purpose in their commitment to the Armenian Cause.
“Empowering the next generation is at the core of ANCA’s mission,” noted Tereza Yerimyan. “It is crucial for Armenian American youth to understand their role in amplifying our community’s voice, whether through engaging with elected officials directly through the ANCA’s advocacy efforts, participating in youth programs, or working for congress.”
As part of the very beneficial and eye-opening educationals offered throughout the weekend, the founder of Lorik Humanitarian Fund Shant Charchafian gave an immersive talk about our historic Lands of Artsakh and their importance in the security of the Republic of Armenia, and Armenians worldwide.
“It felt great to be invited to the AYF Houston “Dro” chapter annual campout to share about my experiences in Artsakh, the current situation, and Lorik Humanitarian Fund’s projects to help the refugees.” Charchafian stated. “At a time when many seem to have forgotten about Artsakh, or at least taken it off the agenda, it is inspiring to see diasporan Armenian youth get together to have a good time and also discuss important topics and ways they can be involved.”
Reflecting on the success of the event, AYF Houston Chair Hovig Abrilian emphasized the significance of such gatherings in uniting the Armenian youth.
“This year at the 2025 AYF Houston Campout, we saw an unprecedented number of participants—both new and familiar—along with an incredible lineup of top-tier guest speakers. We bonded over playing midnight basketball, hiking, fishing by the lake, and proudly raising the Armenian tri-color to Mer Hayrenik.” said Hovig Abrilian. “Each year, we’re grateful to see more and more Armenian youth from across the country discovering a unique AYF camping experience in Texas, thanks to the dedication of the members and alumni of the Houston Dro Chapter and the unwavering support of our older ungers from ARF Serop Aghpyur.”
Ani Frankian, ARF Liaison to the AYF Houston Chapter underscored the importance of fostering a new generation of activists dedicated to the Armenian Cause.
“Since the 1980s, the Armenian community in Texas has been growing stronger and more connected.” Said Ani Frankian. “With the help of ANCA and the ANCA – Western Region, we’re excited to see what the future holds as we continue to make our mark and support the Armenian cause here in Texas. Events like the AYF Houston Campout bring us together, creating memories and strengthening bonds for generations to come.”
The AYF Houston Campout continues to be a key event in fostering Armenian identity and activism in the region. The ANCA-WR looks forward to further strengthening its collaboration with AYF chapters nationwide to cultivate the next generation of Armenian American advocates.
